Thinking back to the start of 2020 no one could have imagined what kind of year it would be. When the terrible news of Covid-19 hit many people and businesses were struck with panic. Are we going to survive this? What does this mean for โusโ as a business? Surely, we will be able to survive for 2 weeks. Right? If back in March, you were to ask anyone how long this would last, they probably would not have guessed all the way into August. It is difficult for us to imagine, but the reality for many business owners is Covid-19 will leave a lasting effect. Sure, there are some businesses that may recover in a couple of months and others may take a couple of years. However, the sad truth is many businesses wonโt recover at all.
We had the opportunity to talk with one local business owner who, like many, has struggled with the effects of Covid-19. Thankfully for him, he has been lucky enough to not suffer the same horrible fate as many other small business owners. His small business is still up and running.
Let us introduce you to Gabe Fletcher, owner of Total Detailing in Pottstown, PA. Gabeโs journey into opening his own auto detailing company started differently than many others. Gabe originally started with a career in IT working on websites. After working many years in IT his health became a sacrifice to his job. It got to the point, where he had to decide to continue on the same path or change his life for the better. He underwent major weight loss surgery, which had its own difficulties and complications. With worrisome complications and the recent memory of being overweight, he realized that a career change into a more active field would be more suitable for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Cars had always been an interest to Gabe, so an auto detailing company was the perfect choice for a new business venture.
Gabe has worked tirelessly to open, run, and grow his business from the ground up. For someone who has developed their business into a flourishing one, you can imagine his worry when Covid-19 hit. When all the restrictions hit, he wondered if he would be able to stay open or if he would have to shut down. Since his business provides car maintenance, he was able to remain open through everything. Remaining open is a blessing but that does not mean that it does not come with its own struggles. Because of Covid-19 supplies have been low and hard to come by, making it difficult to serve customers to the standards he had set for himself. Although his personal perspectives have changed and he now worries about his own health and the health of his customers, he knows that if he maintains policies of cleanliness, then he will be able to continue to serve his customers. Gabe hopes that he has prepared enough to continue to grow, succeed, and serve his customers to the best of his ability.
